What is PAT?

PAT (or Portable Appliance Testing) is composed of two elements. The first is a visual inspection. This consists of an assessment to ascertain if the appliance is suitable for the environment and if it is fit for purpose. If that is satisfactory then we proceed to examine the plug, the flex, the switches and the case.

If the appliance passes the visual inspection then it will be tested to assure that the appliance is electrically safe. If an appliance passes successfully then it is safe to use by the public or employees.

Who needs it?

You need to have a PAT testing policy if you are . . .

  • responsible for any premises where employees work,
  • responsible for any premises where members of the public have access.
  • a landlord or letting agent who is letting a property where electrical appliances are left for tenants to use.
Why do it?

There are a number of Regulatory Acts
(Health and Safety at Work 1974, Provision and Use of Work Equipment 1998, Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, etc)
that are concerned with the use of electrical equipment and the damage that it can cause to persons and to private property.

Obviously no-one should be put at risk of suffering electrical shock or burns due to badly maintained or inadequate equipment. All these Regulatory Acts set the standards that must be achieved. PAT TESTING is the best way to ensure that your business is complying with all of those regulations.

You have to be aware that if the Health and Safety Executive or Fire Department inspect your premises, you may be asked for proof that you are taking effective steps in maintaining your electrical equipment. If you don’t, you may be fined.

In the event of an accident, the person responsible for the premises can be held accountable if they have failed to meet their statutory requirements. Equally your insurance company could deny payment of compensation if a competent person has not inspected an appliance for which you are responsible.

We live increasingly in a society where the “compensation culture” is on the rise. An effective PAT Testing policy implemented for your company is the best way to avoid all of these risks.

Where applicable fuses will be changed at no extra cost. If a plug is changed there will be a £1 charge.

All prices are guidelines and depend on travelling distance and the hours at which the inspection will be done. For an accurate quote it is best to contact me and discuss your needs.

Please note that the first time electrical equipment is inspected and tested, a lot of time is taken on data entry, but once this has been done I will keep your records so the next time that you are due for inspection the process will be much quicker, as all assets will be bar-coded.
